During her time at the Center for Japanese Studies in Okayama, Blair met with several local potters and observed them as they created Bizen ware. Her album contains photos of several potters, their families, workspaces, and recent creations. Below are profiles of two potters that she met with, as well as images of their work.
Yamamoto Toshu
Yamamoto Toshu (1906 - 1994) began learning pottery as a teenage apprentice in 1921. Throughout his career as a Bizen ware potter, Yamamoto received awards and was recognized by the Japanese government for his contribution to traditional Japanese art. In her album, Blair took the opportunity to highlight Yamamoto’s relationships as well as his focus on his work.
